Universal Apostolic Preferences announced

Earlier this week Fr General Arturo Sosa SJ announced four new Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) of the Society of Jesus for the next ten years. An “Apostolic Preference” is a “priority for discernment”, in which Jesuits recognise the calls made by the Holy Spirit as they read the signs of the times.

The new preferences are:

Promoting discernment and the Spiritual Exercises

Walking with the excluded

Caring for our common home

Journeying with young people

This announcement is the culmination of a process of discernment and reflection throughout the Society which has lasted almost two years. It began at the 36th General Congregation in 2016, which asked Fr Sosa to review the 2003 preferences of Fr General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach SJ (China, Africa, the intellectual apostolate, the Roman Houses, and migrants and refugees).

The preferences having been confirmed by Pope Francis, the process of implementation now starts across the global Jesuit world.
