This year the Religious Sisters of Charity are celebrating the bicentenary of their foundation in Dublin in 1815, to provide services "to the suffering poor". Two hundred years later over 400 sisters continue her mission in Ireland, Scotland, England, California, Zambia, Nigeria and Malawi, plus 145 sisters in Australia.
There have been commemorative events throughout the year in different places. You can read about the celebrations in Airdrie, Scotland here... and in Clydebank, Scotland, here...
In March their foundress, Mary Aikenhead (1787 - 1858) was declared Venerable by Pope Francis. You can read more about her here. In July the sisters launched a free app - In the Footsteps of Mary Aikenhead - with the aim of bringing her story to a new 21st century audience.
